This is part of the introduction to the book
townships, and a whole lot
of nothing else. Most of the trip was over
highway roads, but one
connecting stretch between two highways was
a narrow, lumpy, two-lane
road which cut a path through a couple of
so-called towns that
featured nothing more than a post office, junk
dealers, Mexican food,
mobile homes, and deteriorating shacks. If
there was a significant
rain, the road flooded, and Vegas would only
be accessible through a
long detour around the county. If it snowed,
which were rare occasions,
but not unheard of, the road was again
closed. Most of the year
the road remained open, as it doesn’t
usually
rain or snow in the
desert, but you still had to contend with the slow
drivers and the occasional dangerous pass attempt.
